Middle Of The Sun is really a personal song. I find myself jumping the fence of being a hermit and being a social butterfly all the time. You see this with a lot of entertainers (especially with my comedian friends- those people are dark), where they pull out all the stops doing their performances but when they are not performing, you really don’t see much of them.

You could misconstrue this song as being about loneliness, but that’s not the case. It’s about enjoying my time alone, while also having fun entertaining people. To me, that’s the best of both worlds.

Writing about the lyrics of Lucky Stars is probably going to be anti-climatic, since it’s really just a playful use of words. You have me applying a number of negative adjectives about love, as if I am talking to Love (as a noun), and then submitting to Love at the end of the song. It reminds me of the days when lyricists used to write for crooners like Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Bing Crosby, Cole Porter, (I listened to a lot of Cole Porter when I was younger because my Grandma loved him. She would have been horrified to know he was gay) or musicals.

The bridge is a little more interesting because I am using the Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme as a metaphor to describe an emotionally challenged (euphemism for ‘psycho’) girl who goes through a multitude of guys that want to be her caretaker, only to end up being dumped over and over.

The idea came to me when I was in Manhattan (New York). Walking along the sidewalk, I came across a very large billboard in Time Square which said “Every __ seconds a women is beaten”. Just underneath that verbiage was an advertisement for Garth Brooks. Why is Garth Brooks important. Well, there’s the stereotypical coincidence that rednecks are often related to wife beating (’wearing wife beater t-shirts), but more importantly there is this little fact- Wine And Cigarettes was originally written as a country song.

As the album title would suggest, all the songs are about life, love and drugs. Believe it or not, Wine And Cigarettes is about drugs….

Basically, I was going out with a women whose sister was Heroin addict at the time. The song is mostly about her, but I watched the addiction affect her family in such a way that I started noticing certain vices that they were hanging on to as well, such the consistent indulgence of wine and cigarettes.

I am happy to say that she has been clean for a long time now, so not everything has to be a sad story.
